Do you know your area and the history of Clapham?
The majority of Clapham resides in the Borough of Lambeth and has the postcode SW4, however some well known areas like Clapham Common are part of the next borough, Wandsworth. The 2011 census placed the population at 40,850 people.
Other areas are referred to as Clapham South, which has no fixed boundaries, and Clapham North. Clapham North sits either side of Clapham road, following a border with Stockwell going all the way up to Brixton. Clapham hasn’t always looked like it does in the 21st century though, read more below about the history of the place.
Clapham High Street follow the same route of a diverted section of a roman road from the 1st century, that went from London to Chichester. At the entrance to the old Clapham Library in the Old Town, you can see a roman stane that indicates the old road that used to run along there. It was discovered during building work in 1912.
The Doomsday Book references Clapham as Clopeham, belonging to Goisfrid de Mandeville and was roughly 5 acres. Fast forward to the 17th century and larger country houses are starting to be built, this will continue all the way into the early 19th century, funded by wealthy merchants from the city. Wealthy merchants were also behind the forming of the Clapham Sect, a group in the 18th and 19th century that campaigned for the abolition of slavery, child labour and for reform within the prison system.
Moving forward in time again to the 20th and 21st centuries, the railways changed the place hugely. With easier access to the city, Clapham became a commuting suburb for London. By the middle of the 20th century, many of the grand houses that used to stand in the area had been demolished, except around the Common and the Old Town, because of a fall in favour with the wealthy merchants that once populated the area. As a result, the architecture in the area is really varied, ranging from Georgian, to Victorian, and all the way to the social housing of the 60s. Coming forward to the 80s and Clapham experienced a large amount of gentrification because of its close proximity to the wealthy suburbs of West London.
